Christopher Heede - Personal Page
I have supported myself from my ceramics since high school, and haven't
worked for anyone since. I love my work because of the freedom that it brings,
with regard to my work and life. Every day in my studio I get to decide what
to make, and what my day will entail. I tend to work too much because it's hard
to separate your work as an artist, and your life. My studio is next to my
house so my commute is a short walk through the desert. I try to approach my
work with a playful attitude like a child's, although I have to admit that
working with clay can be as stressful as any job. Sometimes pieces blow up in
the kiln, or they fall over while throwing on the potter's wheel. Ceramics has

taught me patience, and to try to let things go with the flow, and not to be
too critical of myself.
My day often includes getting up early and going to the gym for a couple of
hours - it's my social time and it's nice to see people. I come home and get to
work around 9 a.m., often starting off the day with loading a kiln, or washing
off raku pots. I try to break my day up into doing several projects, instead of
doing the same thing all day. When I fire my large kiln it often takes 10 to 12
hours to fire, and I usually fire raku at night because you can see what's going
on inside the kiln. I've always loved fire since I was a kid, and I'm glad that
my work enables me to be around it.
In my free time I love to work on projects around the house. I like to
figure out how things work, and usually have some project in mind before the
one I'm working on is done. I have two white German Shepherds that would follow
me anywhere, and they are great company. I like this saying: "God please let me
be the person my dog thinks I am". I also built a fish pond about two years ago,
and have a lot of tropical plants, and eighteen fish. It took a year for them
to trust me, and now they feed out of my hand. I also enjoy ping pong and doing
anything outdoors, such as hiking and snow skiing.
